Resources & FAQs

Starting therapy comes with questions, that's completely normal. Below you'll find answers to the things people most often want to know. If you don't see your question here, please contact me directly. I'm happy to help you figure out if we're a good fit.

Getting Started Questions

  • How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If something in your life feels harder than it should, if you're struggling with emotions you can't manage on your own, or if you're curious whether talking to someone might help, therapy might be a good fit. You don't need to be in crisis. Sometimes the best time to start is before things get worse.

  • What happens in the first session?

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We'll talk about what brought you to therapy, what you're hoping to gain, and any questions you have. It's a relaxed conversation, no pressure, no judgment. My job is to listen, understand where you're coming from, and start thinking about how I can support you.

  • How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule a free consultation through my [contact page] or by emailing me directly. During the consultation, we'll talk about what's going on and whether working together feels like a good fit. From there, we'll find a time for your first session.

Logistics Questions

  • How long are sessions?

Individual therapy sessions are 53 minutes to an hour.

  • How often do people come to therapy?

Most clients start with weekly sessions. This consistency helps build momentum and develop a strong working relationship. Over time, we may adjust to biweekly or monthly as you build skills and confidence. We'll find a rhythm that works for you.

  • Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. All sessions are via secure, HIPAA-compliant video. No commuting, no waiting rooms. Many clients find virtual therapy works just as well as in-person.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or missed sessions may be charged the full session fee. I understand life happens and will try to be flexible when possible.

  • How does virtual therapy work?

Before each session, I'll send you a secure link to join our video call. You need a private space, reliable internet, and a device with camera and microphone. The platform is HIPAA-compliant.

Fees and Insurance Questions

  • What are your fees?

Please visit my [Fees & Insurance page] for current session rates. I'm happy to discuss fees during our initial consultation.

  • Do you accept insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider. I can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Many clients with out-of-network benefits receive partial reimbursement.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept credit cards, debit cards, and HSA/FSA cards. Payment is collected at the time of session.

Therapy Process Questions

  • How long does therapy take?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Some clients find meaningful progress in a few months; others benefit from longer-term support. It depends on what you're working on and how things unfold. We'll regularly check in about your progress.

  • What approach do you use?

I draw from evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, and behavioral activation. This means we'll work on understanding the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and develop practical strategies for your daily life. I tailor my approach to each client.

  • Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, with very few exceptions. What you share in therapy stays between us. I'm only required to break confidentiality if there's imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. I'll explain these limits fully in our first session.

  • What if I don't know what to talk about?

That's completely fine. You don't need to arrive with a prepared agenda. Sometimes the most valuable sessions start with "I don't know what to talk about today." Part of my job is helping you explore what's on your mind, even when it's not clear at first.
